Dimethyl sulfoxide

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound that is a colorless, odorless, and transparent liquid at room temperature. It is a hygroscopic and flammable liquid. It has the characteristics of high polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, non proton, and water solubility. It can dissolve in most organic compounds such as ethanol, propanol, benzene, and chloroform, and is known as the "universal solvent". Heating in the presence of acid will produce small amounts of compounds such as methyl mercaptan, formaldehyde, dimethyl sulfide, and methanesulfonic acid. It decomposes at high temperatures and reacts violently with chlorine, emitting a light blue flame when burned in air. Can be used as organic solvents, reaction media, and organic synthesis intermediates. It can also be used as a dyeing solvent, dye remover, dyeing carrier for synthetic fibers, as well as an absorbent for recovering acetylene and sulfur dioxide.

Application area

1. Used as a reaction medium for aromatic hydrocarbon extraction, resin and dye, solvent for acrylic fiber polymerization, and silk drawing.
2. Can be used as organic solvents, reaction media, and organic synthesis intermediates. Widely used. This product has high selective extraction ability and is used as a polymerization and condensation solvent for acrylic resins and polysulfone esters, a polymerization and spinning solvent for polyacrylonitrile and acetic acid fibers, an extraction solvent for separating alkanes and aromatics, a reaction medium for aromatics and butadiene extraction, acrylic spinning, plastic solvents, organic synthesis dyes, pharmaceuticals and other industries. In the field of medicine, dimethyl sulfoxide has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, strong penetration into the skin, and can dissolve certain drugs, allowing them to penetrate into the human body and achieve therapeutic goals. By utilizing the carrier properties of dimethyl sulfoxide, it can also be used as an additive in pesticides.
3. Used as analytical reagents and gas chromatography fixatives, as well as solvents for UV spectroscopic analysis.
4. Transdermal enhancers.
5. Antifreeze agent. Dimethyl sulfoxide antifreeze is used in automobiles and tanks in cold northern regions and can be replenished with snow instead of water at any time. Dimethyl sulfoxide is also used as a de icing agent, coating, antifreeze for various latex products, antifreeze for gasoline and aviation fuel, and antifreeze for low-temperature preservation of bone marrow, blood, and organs.
