Essential information
Styrene (C8H8) is an organic compound formed by replacing one hydrogen atom of ethylene with benzene. The electron of the vinyl group is conjugated with the benzene ring and is insoluble in water. It is soluble in ethanol and ether and gradually undergoes polymerization and oxidation when exposed to air. In industry, it is an important monomer for synthetic resins, ion exchange resins, and synthetic rubber.
Application area
Its important use is as monomer of synthetic rubber and plastic to produce styrene butadiene rubber, polystyrene, foam polystyrene; It is also used to copolymerize with other monomers to manufacture engineering plastics for various purposes. ABS resin, produced by copolymerization with acrylonitrile and butadiene, is widely used in various household appliances and industries; SAN produced by copolymerization with acrylonitrile is an impact resistant and brightly colored resin; SBS produced by copolymerization with butadiene is a thermoplastic rubber widely used as a modifier for polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, and other materials.
Styrene is mainly used in the production of styrene series resins and styrene butadiene rubber. It is also one of the raw materials for the production of ion exchange resins and pharmaceuticals. In addition, styrene can be used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, dyes, pesticides, and mineral processing.
Packaging, Storage, Transportation, and Safety
Transportation precautions: During railway transportation, the dangerous goods loading table in the "Dangerous Goods Transport Rules" of the Ministry of Railways should be strictly followed for loading. Transport vehicles should be equipped with corresponding types and quantities of fire-fighting equipment and emergency response equipment for leaks during transportation. It is recommended to transport in the morning and evening during summer. The tank truck used for transportation should have a grounding chain, and a perforated partition can be installed inside the tank to reduce static electricity generated by vibration. It is strictly prohibited to mix and transport with oxidants, acids, edible chemicals, etc. During transportation, it should be protected from direct sunlight, rain, and high temperatures. When stopping midway, one should stay away from sources of fire, heat, and high temperature areas. The exhaust pipe of the vehicle carrying the item must be equipped with a flame retardant device, and the use of mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to generating sparks for loading and unloading is prohibited. When transporting by road, follow the prescribed route and do not stay in residential or densely populated areas. It is prohibited to slip during railway transportation. It is strictly prohibited to use wooden boats or cement boats for bulk transportation.
