Basic information
Methylal is a colorless, clear and volatile flammable liquid with chloroform odor and irritation. It is soluble in 3 times of water (32% (mass) in water at 20 ℃). It is irritating to the mucous membrane and has an anesthetic effect. Inhalation of vapor can cause irritation of the nose and throat; high concentration inhalation of dizziness and so on. There is damage to the eyes, and the damage can last for several days. Long-term skin contact can cause dry skin.
Application areas
Mainly used in the production of anion effect for resin, but also as a solvent and special fuel. Its dissolving ability is stronger than that of ether and acetone, and methanol and azeotropic mixture can dissolve nitrocellulose with high nitrogen content. However, due to its strong anesthetic vapor, it should not be used as a general solvent, usually as a special acoustic solvent. It is also used in the manufacture of perfumes, the production of artificial resins, and as a reaction medium for Grignart reactions and rapa (synthetic) reactions.
