Basic information
An organic compound, an isomer of n-propanol, alias dimethyl methanol, 2-propanol, also known as IPA in the industry. Colorless transparent liquid, like ethanol and acetone mixed
The smell of matter, can be miscible with alcohol, ether, chloroform and water, can dissolve alkaloids, rubber, shellac, rosin, synthetic resin and other organic and some inorganic substances, form azeotrope with water, insoluble in salt solution. It can be ignited and burned at normal temperature, and its steam and air are easily mixed to form an explosive mixture.
Isopropanol is prone to the production of peroxides and sometimes needs to be identified before use. The method is: take 0.5mL isopropanol, add 1mL 10% potassium iodide solution, 0.5mL 1:5 dilute hydrochloric acid and a few drops of starch solution, shake for 1 minute, if blue or blue-black, peroxide is proved. It is similar to ethanol and propanol, but has the characteristics of secondary alcohols.
Application areas
As organic raw materials and solvents have a wide range of uses.
As chemical raw materials, it can produce acetone, hydrogen peroxide, methyl isobutyl ketone, diisobutyl ketone, isopropylamine, isopropyl ether, isopropyl chloride, and fatty acid isopropyl ester and chlorinated fatty acid isopropyl ester.
In fine chemicals, it can be used to produce isopropyl nitrate, isopropyl xanthate, triisopropyl phosphite, aluminum isopropoxide, pharmaceuticals and pesticides, and can also be used to produce diisopropyl ketone, isopropyl acetate and thymol and gasoline additives.
As a solvent, it is a relatively cheap solvent in industry. It has a wide range of uses, can be freely mixed with water, and has a stronger solubility for lipophilic substances than ethanol. It can be used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, rubber, coatings, shellac, alkaloids, etc. Can be used to produce coatings, inks, extractants, aerosol agents, etc. It can also be used as an antifreeze, detergent, additive for blending gasoline, dispersant for pigment production, fixing agent for printing and dyeing industry, antifogging agent for glass and transparent plastic, etc. Used as a diluent for adhesives, also used for antifreeze, dehydrating agent, etc.
As chromatographic standards, barium, calcium, copper, magnesium, nickel, potassium, sodium, strontium, nitrous acid, cobalt, etc. Used as a defoamer for water-based fracturing fluid in oil wells, air forms an explosive mixture, which can cause combustion and explosion when exposed to open flame and high heat energy, and can react strongly with oxidant.
In the electronics industry, it can be used as a cleaning and degreasing agent. In the oil industry, the extraction agent of cottonseed oil can also be used for degreasing of animal-derived tissue membranes.
Packaging, transportation and safety
Class I flammable liquids. Sealed for preservation. 150Kg barrel packaging, should be in a cool, ventilated special warehouse, away from the fire source, according to the provisions of flammable chemicals storage and transportation
