Essential information
Sodium chloride, colorless cubic crystals or white crystals, is the main component of table salt. Easy to dissolve in water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and liquid ammonia, insoluble in hydrochloric acid, and slightly deliquescent in air. Mainly used in the production of industrial raw materials such as chlorine gas, hydrogen gas, bleach powder, and sodium metal, as well as for supplying salt precipitation soap, tanning leather, food seasoning, and pickled fish, meat, and vegetables. If consumed excessively, it can easily lead to hypertension.
Application area
Industry
1. When electrolyzing sodium chloride aqueous solution, hydrogen gas and chlorine gas are generated. Chlorine gas has a wide range of applications in the chemical industry and can be used to synthesize polyvinyl chloride, insecticides, hydrochloric acid, etc.
2. Preparation of metallic sodium by electrolyzing a mixture of molten sodium chloride and calcium chloride. Calcium chloride can be used as a flux to lower the melting point of sodium chloride to below 700 ° C. Calcium has lower reducibility than sodium and does not introduce impurities. [2]
3. Sodium chloride is essential for many biological reactions, such as various solution formulations in molecular biology experiments containing sodium chloride, and most bacterial culture media containing sodium chloride. It is also a raw material for the production of pure alkali by ammonia alkali method.
4. Inorganic and organic industries are used as raw materials for manufacturing caustic soda, chlorates, hypochlorites, bleaching powders, refrigerants for refrigeration systems, raw materials for organic synthesis, and salt precipitation agents. Used as a heat treatment agent in the steel industry. A salt bath composed of potassium chloride, barium chloride, etc. in a high-temperature heat source can be used as a heating medium to maintain the temperature between 820 and 960 ℃. In addition, it is also used in industries such as glass, dyes, metallurgy, etc.
5. Analytical reagents are used as trace analysis reagents for fluoride and silicates.
Edible
The food and fishing industries use it for salting, and it can also be used as a raw material for seasoning and refined salt.
Adding salt to cooking dishes can remove some odors from the ingredients and enhance their deliciousness, which is the freshness enhancing effect of salt. 'Pale and tasteless, salty and tasteless' means that the amount of salt used should be appropriate in order to fully utilize its unique functions.
medical
Sodium chloride is very important for life on Earth. Most biological tissues contain various salts. The concentration of sodium ions in the blood is directly related to the regulation of the safe level of body fluids. The transmission of nerve impulses caused by signal conversion is also regulated by sodium ions.
Water containing 0.9% sodium chloride is called physiological saline because it has the same osmotic pressure as plasma. Physiological saline is the main fluid substitute widely used for the treatment and prevention of dehydration, as well as for intravenous injection therapy and prevention of hypovolemic shock.
Unlike other primates, humans secrete large amounts of sodium chloride through sweating.
Sodium chloride is essential for humans. The total amount of sodium ions in the adult body is about 60 g, of which 80% are present in the extracellular fluid, namely in plasma and intercellular fluid. Chloride ions are mainly present in extracellular fluid. The physiological functions of sodium ions and chloride ions mainly include:
(1) Maintain the osmotic pressure of extracellular fluid;
(2) Participate in the regulation of acid-base balance in the body;
(3) Chloride ions participate in the generation of gastric acid in the body, and sodium chloride also plays a role in maintaining normal excitability of nerves and muscles.

According to a new discovery released by the Singapore Institute of Technology, sodium chloride can significantly increase the capacity of hard drives. Specifically, traditional hard drives use randomly allocated disk storage technology, which can only achieve a data density of 0.5TB per square inch. And the new technology benefits from the help of sodium chloride, combined with new high-resolution lithography factor technology, the data density will be more orderly, reaching 3.3TB per square inch without the need for complex equipment upgrades. By adopting this technology, a 1TB hard drive can achieve a capacity of 6TB without the need for additional disks.
Packaging, Storage, Transportation, and Safety
Precautions for operation: Closed operation, strengthen ventilation. Operators must undergo specialized training and strictly adhere to operating procedures. It is recommended that operators wear self-priming filter dust masks, chemical safety goggles, anti toxic work clothes, and rubber gloves. Avoid generating dust. Avoid contact with oxidants. Handle with care during transportation to prevent damage to packaging and containers. Equip with emergency response equipment for leaks. Empty containers may contain residual harmful substances.
Storage precautions: Store in a cool and ventilated warehouse. Stay away from sources of fire and heat. It should be stored separately from oxidants and avoid mixing storage. The storage area should be equipped with suitable materials to contain leaked materials.
