Sodium tripolyphosphate

Sodium tripolyphosphate is formed by neutralizing phosphoric acid with soda ash to form sodium orthophosphate, which is then condensed. There are two methods for producing phosphoric acid: wet method and hot method. Wet method is to react phosphate ore with inorganic acid (usually sulfuric acid, but hydrochloric acid can also be used), extract and refine them to obtain phosphoric acid. Thermal method is to roast phosphate ore together with coke and silica in an electric furnace, reduce phosphate minerals to phosphorus, and then oxidize and hydrate to obtain phosphoric acid.

Industry
Used as a detergent additive, it can also be used in petroleum, metallurgy, mining, papermaking, water treatment, etc. Mainly used as an additive for synthetic detergents, as a soap enhancer and to prevent soap oil precipitation and frosting. It has a strong emulsifying effect on lubricating oil and fat, and can be used to adjust the pH value of buffer soap solution. Softener for industrial water. Leather making agent. Dyeing auxiliaries. Used as dispersants in the preparation of suspensions in industries such as paint, kaolin, magnesium oxide, and calcium carbonate. Drilling mud dispersant. The paper industry uses it as an oil repellent. A quality improver and moisture retention agent used in the food industry for canned food, fruit juice beverages, dairy products, soy milk, and other products. Mainly used for tenderizing canned ham and softening the skin of canned fava beans. It can also be used as a softener and thickener.
STPP also has its inevitable environmental hazards, as it contains phosphorus and can easily cause eutrophication of water bodies.
Due to the implementation of the national phosphorus restriction policy, the application of sodium tripolyphosphate in detergent additives has gradually decreased and is being replaced by products such as layered sodium silicate and molecular sieves.
