Basic information

Polyethylene glycol is a high molecular polymer, the chemical formula is HO(CH2CH2O)nH, non-irritating, slightly bitter taste, has good water solubility, and has good compatibility with many organic components. It has excellent lubricity, moisture retention, dispersion and adhesion, and can be used as antistatic agent and softener. It is widely used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemical fiber, rubber, plastics, paper making, paint, electroplating, pesticide, metal processing and food processing industries.

 

 

 

 

Application areas

Polyethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol fatty acid esters are widely used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Because polyethylene glycol has many excellent properties: water solubility, non-volatile, physiological inertia, mildness, lubricity and moisturizing the skin, softness, and a pleasant feeling after use. Different relative molecular mass fractions of polyethylene glycol can be selected to change the viscosity, hygroscopicity and structure of the product. Low relative molecular weight polyethylene glycol (Mr<2000) is suitable for use as a wetting agent and consistency regulator for creams, lotions, toothpastes and shaving creams, etc., is also suitable for unwashed hair care products, giving hair a silky luster. Polyethylene glycol (Mr>2000) with high molecular weight is suitable for lipstick, deodorant stick, soap, shaving soap, foundation and beauty cosmetics. In cleaning agents, polyethylene glycols are also used as suspending and thickening agents. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a base for ointments, creams, ointments, lotions and suppositories.
Polyethylene glycol is widely used in various pharmaceutical preparations such as injections, topical preparations, ophthalmic preparations, oral and rectal preparations. Solid grade polyethylene glycol can be added to liquid polyethylene glycol to adjust the viscosity for topical ointment; polyethylene glycol mixture can be used as a suppository base; aqueous solution of polyethylene glycol can be used as a suspending agent or to adjust the viscosity of other suspension media; polyethylene glycol and other emulsifiers are used in combination to increase the stability of the emulsion. In addition, polyethylene glycol is also used as a film coating agent, a tablet lubricant, a controlled release material, and the like.

As a papermaking additive, it improves the retention of fillers and fines. When the relative molecular mass is above 3 million, it has good dispersion, certain wettability, drag reduction and pyrolysis. It is an effective deflocculant. Adding into the pulp can increase the viscosity of the pulp, prevent the fibers from adhering to each other, improve the uniformity of the paper, reduce the power consumption of pulping, and improve the physical strength.

 

 

 

Packaging, transportation and safety

Polyethylene glycol is chemically stable in air and in solution, but its molecular weight is lower than that of 2000. Not suitable for microbial growth, also not easy to rancidity.
The polyethylene glycol and its aqueous solution can be sterilized by autoclaving, filter sterilization or gamma irradiation. If the solid state is sterilized by dry heat at 150 ℃ for 1 hour, oxidation and degradation can be induced.
Should be placed in a cool, dry place, stored in a closed container. Liquid grade polyethylene glycol can be stored in stainless steel, aluminum and glass containers.
