essential information
Colorless, sweet, clear, viscous liquid. Odorless. It has a warm and sweet taste. Commonly known as glycerol, it can absorb moisture from the air and also absorb hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen cyanide, and sulfur dioxide. Neutral to litmus. Long term exposure to low temperatures of 0 ℃ can form shiny rhombohedral crystals with a melting point of 17.8 ℃. Encountering strong oxidants such as chromium trioxide, potassium chlorate, and potassium permanganate can cause combustion and explosion. It can be mixed with water and ethanol at will. One part of this product can dissolve in 11 parts of ethyl acetate and about 500 parts of ether, but is insoluble in benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide, petroleum ether, and oils. Suitable for analysis of aqueous solutions, solvents, gas meters, hydraulic shock absorbers, softeners, nutrient agents for antibiotic fermentation, desiccants, lubricants, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics formulation, organic synthesis, plasticizers. It can dissolve in water at any ratio, and low concentration propylene glycol solution can be used as a lubricating oil to moisturize the skin (such as glycerin).
application area
Industrial use
1. Used for manufacturing nitroglycerin, alkyd resin, and epoxy resin.
2. In medicine, it is used to prepare various preparations, solvents, desiccants, antifreeze agents, and sweeteners, and to prepare topical ointments or suppositories.
3. Used in the coating industry to produce various types of alkyd resins, polyester resins, glycidyl ethers, and epoxy resins.
4. Used in the textile and printing and dyeing industry to produce lubricants, moisture absorbents, fabric anti wrinkle treatment agents, dispersants, and penetrants.
5. Used as a sweetener, tobacco absorbent, and solvent in the food industry.
6. It has a wide range of applications in industries such as papermaking, cosmetics, leather making, photography, printing, metalworking, electrical materials, and rubber.
7. And used as fuel for cars and airplanes, as well as antifreeze for oil fields.
Biogenic glycerol
One of the high-quality edible grade glycerol is bio refined glycerol, which contains not only glycerol but also reducing sugars such as esters and glucose, and belongs to the category of polyol glycerol; In addition to moisturizing and nourishing functions, it also has special effects such as high activity, antioxidant, and promotion of aging.
Edible glycerin
Glycerol is the backbone component of triglyceride molecules. When the human body ingests edible fat, the triglycerides in it are metabolized and broken down in the body to form glycerol, which is stored in fat cells. Therefore, the end products of triglyceride metabolism are glycerol and fatty acids.
Each gram of glycerol can be completely oxidized to produce 4 calories, which will not change blood sugar and insulin levels after being absorbed by the human body. Glycerol is a commonly used sweetener and moisturizer in the food processing industry, mostly found in sports food and dairy substitutes.
Application in beverages such as fruit juice and vinegar
Fruits of different qualities contain varying degrees of tannins, which are the source of bitterness and astringency in fruits.
Field use
In the wild, glycerol can not only serve as an energy source to meet the needs of the human body. It can also be used as an ignition agent. The method is to pile 5-10 grams of potassium permanganate solid under the combustible material, and then pour glycerol on top of the potassium permanganate. After about half a minute, flames will emerge. Because glycerol is viscous, it can be diluted with flammable organic solvents such as anhydrous ethanol beforehand, but the solvent should not be too much.
Packaging, Storage, Transportation, and Safety
Operation precautions
The structure of propylene glycol should be operated in a closed manner, with attention paid to ventilation. Operators must undergo specialized training and strictly adhere to operating procedures. It is recommended that operators wear self-priming filter type gas masks (half face masks), chemical safety goggles, work clothes that prevent toxic substances from penetrating, and rubber gloves. Keep away from sources of fire and heat, and smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Use explosion-proof ventilation systems and equipment. Prevent steam leakage into the workplace air. Avoid contact with oxidants and acids. Handle with care during transportation to prevent damage to packaging and containers. Equip with corresponding types and quantities of fire-fighting equipment and emergency response equipment for leaks. Empty containers may contain residual harmful substances.
Storage precautions
Store in a cool and ventilated warehouse. Stay away from sources of fire and heat. It should be stored separately from oxidants and acids, and avoid mixing storage. Equip with corresponding types and quantities of fire-fighting equipment. The storage area should be equipped with emergency response equipment for leaks and suitable containment materials.
