Petroleum ether

Petroleum ether, a light petroleum product, is a mixture of low molecular weight hydrocarbons (mainly pentane and hexane), is a colorless transparent liquid with kerosene odor. Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, benzene, chloroform, oils and other organic solvents. Mainly used as a solvent and grease treatment, but volatile and fire. Petroleum ether (PE) and ethyl acetate (EA) are commonly used as eluents in laboratory column chromatography. Petroleum ether is not equal to gasoline, and at the same time, there is no ether bond (C-O-C) in its structure.

Basic information

Petroleum ether is a colorless transparent liquid with kerosene odor. It is mainly a mixture of pentane and hexane. Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, benzene, chloroform, oils and other organic solvents. Flammable and explosive, can react strongly with oxidant. Mainly used as solvent and grease treatment. It is usually produced by fractionation, hydrogenation or other methods using platinum reforming raffinate or straight-run gasoline. Generally have 30~60 ℃, 60~90 ℃, 90~120 ℃ boiling range specifications. Petroleum ether is not equal to gasoline, and at the same time, there is no ether bond (C-O-C) in its structure. Its vapor and air can form an explosive mixture, fire, high heat caused by combustion explosion. The burning flame in the air is bright and has strong black smoke, and does not produce any smoke when completely burned. Can react strongly with oxidants. High-speed impact, flow and agitation can cause combustion and explosion due to electrostatic spark discharge. Its vapor is heavier than air and can spread to a considerable distance at a lower point, and it will catch fire and backburn in case of a fire source.

 

 

 

Application areas

Mainly used as solvent, chromatographic analysis of solvent and oil extraction agent, can also be used for organic synthesis and chemical raw materials.

 

 

 

Packaging, transportation and safety

Operation Precautions:

Closed operation, full ventilation. Operators must be specially trained and strictly abide by the operating procedures. It is recommended that the operator wear a filtering gas mask (half mask), chemical safety protection glasses, anti-static work clothes, and rubber and oil-resistant gloves. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Use explosion-proof ventilation systems and equipment. Prevent vapor leakage into the workplace air. Avoid contact with oxidizing agents. Handle and unload lightly to prevent damage to packaging and containers. Equipped with corresponding types and quantities of fire fighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment. Empty containers may leave harmful substances.

 

Storage Precautions:
Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat source. The temperature of the warehouse should not exceed 25 ℃. Keep container sealed. Should be stored separately from the oxidant, do not mix storage. Explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities shall be adopted. It is forbidden to use mechanical equipment and tools that are easy to produce sparks. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and suitable containment materials.
